It is a reflection of creativity and productivity in society. Creativity and the ability to be productive are tools entrusted to us by God to manage for a time and we have a responsibility to be good stewards with what we have. Money is a powerful tool that can solve many problems and our goal is to leverage it to help others who are in less fortunate situations and through our efforts, glorify God.
Generally, publicly traded markets and many established private markets are efficiently priced. That means there is no "edge" or under/over valuation in most cases and thus "beating the market" is not consistently possible without additional strategies that provide a statistical "edge."
In public markets, there are rare instances of inefficient pricing, usually in very small companies or special situations; those situations provide an opportunity for a statistical edge and should be acted on. In addition, the options and derivatives markets provide the tools to reduce cost basis and improve the probability of a gain.
In private markets, companies in need of capital in markets that are not well established are many times priced inefficiently and provide attractive opportunities. Private companies and start-ups have more liquidity risk and usually more bankruptcy risk than publicly traded securities, but the potential for much higher growth and the opportunity to influence control of the business.
A combination of both public and private securities, and using options and derivatives to improve probabilities, creates a portfolio with a lower risk profile and higher expected return than traditional asset classes and strategies.
